Introduction

The market for electric vehicles has experienced rapid growth in recent years, with over 10 million electric vehicles being sold in 2022. More than 60% of global electric vehicle sales are in China. Europe and the United States represent the second and third largest markets. It is worth highlighting that all these countries experience winter seasons, where temperatures can plummet to as low as -25°C. Electric vehicle manufacturers must ensure the battery can deliver the same power output as at normal temperatures under extremely low-temperature conditions.

 

Challenges

At extremely low temperatures, batteries tend to degrade significantly. The same holds true for the lithium-ion battery found in electric vehicles. Low battery temperature is often referred to as the "cold temperature effect" or "low-temperature performance degradation." This phenomenon can significantly slow chemical reactions in batteries, resulting in decreased power output and slower charging.

 

This phenomenon has significantly impacted the EV industry, particularly in nations in the northern hemisphere. To address these issues, EV manufacturers have implemented a technique involving introducing high-frequency ripple current into EV batteries to reduce the impact of low temperatures on battery performance.
