A military pilot’s best friend may be his radar warning receiver (RWR). When a pilot sees a missile on the RWR, he typically has a few seconds to understand the threat and take decisive action. The key is identifying the specific threat and deploying the correct tactical countermeasures. The RWR is one of many tools and tactics in the pilot’s arsenal. The bigger-picture view is the Electronic Order of Battle (EOB). The EOB details all known combinations of emitters and platforms in a particular area for both sides of a conflict. Simulating this electromagnetic (EM) environment is a key part of testing and evaluating different types of electronic warfare (EW) systems. In test and evaluation, many steps do not require simulation of an entire EOB; instead, characterization can be performed by addressing various subsets. Even when working with a subset, the toughest problem is creating “test realism.” This entails accurate reproduction of individual threats and simultaneous emulation of multiple threats.
