Unattended IoT sensors are increasingly being utilized in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, not just for commercial applications like home lighting and security control, but for industrial applications like energy and utility management, asset tracking, and machine-to-machine communication. That opens the door to many new opportunities in the industrial IoT (IIoT), but it also brings to light a critical issue. Most wireless technologies available today are ill equipped to meet the requirements of the rapidly growing IIoT—a long coverage range and very low power, at very low data rates—without some sort of tradeoff. While low-power wireless area network (LPWAN) technologies have emerged to meet these requirements, current implementations can have weaknesses in security and reliability. In the IIoT, especially mission-critical applications, neither is acceptable. These implementations are also incompatible with existing infrastructure, which often results in very high operational costs.
