The 800GE component and network infrastructure ecosystems, both traditional and AI networks, have expanded rapidly. Most major network equipment manufacturers have introduced high-density 51.2 Tbps switching platforms, all supporting multi-rate Ethernet speeds from 50GE through 800GE with PAM4 encoded signaling and Forward Error Correction (FEC). The same PAM4 and FEC technologies widely adopted for 400GE are now applied to 106.25 Gb/s (53 Gbaud) electrical lanes for 800GE, easing the transition from 400GE to 800GE.
New applications in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and High-Performance Computing are driving rapid build-up and scale-out of large data center fabrics. The result is a diversification of optical transceivers and active and passive interconnect devices each with different wavelengths, media types, reaches, and multi-rate speed support, nearly all managed through the Common Management Interface Specification (CMIS).
Testing the new 1x800GE, 2x400GE, 4x200GE, and 8x100GE port modes is the immediate challenge. However, validation of legacy 400GE PAM4 speeds over 53.125 Gb/s electrical lanes, and 100GE-and-lower NRZ speeds over 26 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s electrical lanes, remains essential on the same physical port of many types of networking equipment.
