This application note demonstrates how to simulate a ring resonator using FullWAVE FDTD. Ring resonators act as high-Q optical filters, coupling only specific resonant wavelengths to an output waveguide while others pass through unchanged, functioning like an optical notch filter.
The example shows two simulation methods: a pulsed excitation to determine the full spectral response, and a continuous wave (CW) simulation to observe how light propagates through the device at a specific resonance. The results show how energy builds up at resonance and exits through the drop port, confirming the filtering behavior of the ring resonator.
