Band Diagrams of Photonic Crystal Slabs (PCS)

This application note demonstrates how to use BandSOLVE to calculate band diagrams of photonic crystal slabs (PCS), which are structures that are periodic in two dimensions and confined in the third by index guiding. The example consists of a cubic array of dielectric rods in air, which form a PCS with a finite height.

 

Because the slab has thickness, both the slab and substrate are required to be in the simulation. The results show band diagrams with light lines used to separate guided modes from radiation modes. Modes are classified by parity as even or odd.

 

The simulation reveals a clear bandgap for odd (quasi-TE) modes between 0.34 and 0.42, while no bandgap exists for even modes. From this demonstration, learn how BandSOLVE can analyze and identify photonic bandgaps in PCS structures.
