As power demand increases, small, spread-out power generators called Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) continue to come online. For these DERs to provide power to the energy grid, they must comply to the many different regional standards. One such standard is IEEE 1547.1-2020 / UL 1741 SB which covers many different tests where compliance is required to connect into the electric utility (grid).

 

This is not a new test requirement. Solar and wind DERs, or any entity sending power to the grid, have been required to test to these standards for many years. They understand that testing to these standards is complex and time consuming. Newcomers to the DER market, such as V2G-enabled Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSEs), more colloquially known as charging stations, may not be familiar with the complexities.
