Optimizing SiC Power Devices Performance
There is steady growth in applications that employ SiC (silicon carbide) power devices, which are already employed in power conditioners for photovoltaic power generation and industrial inverters, and are expected to be employed in inverters and onboard chargers for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Designers face a challenge as a high degree of know-how is required to design power supply circuitry optimized for the best performance of SiC power devices. In general, SiC power devices provide two benefits: they are more efficient in power conversion and can make power supply circuits smaller in size because they work at higher frequencies than conventional Si power devices (Figure 1). Unfortunately, we cannot enjoy such benefits just by replacing Si power devices with SiC power devices because the power supply circuitry needs to be optimized for the characteristics of SiC power devices to maximize their performance. Your SiC circuit’s performance may be just comparable to a Si circuit.
