When engineers must use electromagnetic interference (EMI) receivers to test impulsive input signals with low repetition rates, making quasi-peak detector (QPD) measurements presents significant difficulty. The high peak amplitude of the pulses risks overloading the measurement hardware. Meanwhile, the low repetition rate, or pulse repetition frequency (PRF), means that the output of the QPD approaches the receiver’s inherent noise floor. The Keysight X-Series EMI receivers implement a feature called Noise Floor Extension (NFE) to improve the dynamic range. With proper mathematical modeling and calibration, engineers can characterize the noise power of the receivers and subtract it from the measurement results to improve the effective noise floor.
