This instruction sheet describes the Keysight Technologies, Inc. 81003XD series D-Adapters. These adapters allow you to connect fibers to an Optical Head using single-fiber or ribbon connectors, depending on the receptacle used.

 Fibers Supported

Single fiber connectors for single­mode and multi-mode fibers with a maximum numerical aperture of 0.3 Ribbon connectors containing up to 12 single-mode fibers, each with a maximum numerical aperture of 0.15

Mechanical Lifetime

The plastic receptacle used in these adapters is subject to wear, and may become damaged after a number of insertions.

The following part replacement kits are available:

81003-41701 Repair Kit TD receptacles for Keysight 81003TD adapter (MPO/MTP ribbon connectors). 81003-41702 Repair Kit JD receptacles for Keysight 81003JD adapter (MT-RJ ribbon connectors). 81003-41703 Repair Kit PD receptacles for Keysight 81003PD adapter (MPX ribbon connectors).

Each kit consists of:

  • 10 x EA receptacles
  • 1 x EA wrench
  • 1 x EA instruction sheet

Note

During re-assembly, take care that the receptacle is correctly orientated.

Cleaning Instructions

Cleaning Materials

Swabs

Use natural cotton swabs such as those normally available from a supermarket or a chemist’s shop. Ensure that you use natural cotton swabs; foam swabs often leave behind filmy deposits after cleaning. Swabs should be used straight out of the packet, and never used twice.

Soft tissues

Use multi-layered soft tissues made from non-recycled cellulose, such as those normally available from a supermarket or a chemist’s shop. Tissues should be used straight out of the packet, and never used twice.

Compressed air

Compressed air can be purchased from any laboratory supplier. Make sure that your compressed air is free of dust, water and oil. Only use clean, dry air. 

Isopropyl alcohol

This solvent is usually available from a pharmaceutical supplier or chemist’s shop. Avoid using denatured alcohol containing additives. Use alcohol intended for medical purposes.

 Caution

Some adapters have an anti-reflective coating on the back to reduce back reflection. This coating is extremely sensitive to solvents and mechanical abrasion. Extra care is needed when cleaning these adapters. If you are un­sure how sensitive your devices are to cleaning, contact the manufacturer or your sales distributor. 

 Preferred Procedure:

Use the following procedure on most occasions:

1. Clean the adapter by lightly rubbing  a new, dry cotton swab over the  surface using a small circular movement.

2. Blow away any remaining lint with compressed air.

Procedure for Stubborn Dirt:

Use this procedure when there is greasy dirt on the adapter:

1. Moisten a new cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol.

2. Clean the adapter by lightly rubbing the cotton swab over the surface using a small circular movement.

3. Take a new, dry soft tissue and remove the alcohol, dissolved sediment, and dust, by rubbing gently over the surface using a small circular movement.

4. Blow away any remaining lint with compressed air.
