How to Select MCU for IoT Power Consumption Optimization

The growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) presents interesting and lucrative opportunities for design engineers, but the technical challenges imposed by customer expectations are substantial. For example, customers are demanding ever-longer battery runtimes. Many IoT device vendors now advertise runtimes of 10 to 15 years, and some even claim “set and forget” use models, where the lifetime of the battery exceeds the necessary lifetime of the application.

 

As a device designer, you can participate in the explosive growth of the IoT if you know how to select, configure, and program your device’s microcontroller unit (MCU) to optimize the battery lifetime. Here are five tips to get you started.

 

1) Carefully consider the architecture of your device and its peripherals.

2) Take advantage of memory, clock, timer, and low-power state options.

3) Write your firmware with an eye toward reducing power consumption.

4) Measure power consumption with instruments of sufficient bandwidth and seamless ranging.

5) Frequently generate automated current profiles to evaluate firmware changes.
