Passive intermodulation (PIM) is a form of distortion in components, such as cables, connectors, duplexers and antennas, caused by non-linearities in passive devices. When two or more high-power signals encounter a non-linearity, the resulting intermodulation products can have significant amplitude. In cellular communications, where multi-carrier and multi-band operation is common, products from two or more transmit-signals can fall onto receive bands, thus the unwanted signals can increase the received noise level and degrade the system performance.
