With the drive to accommodate today’s world of network-connected mobile applications, each successive technology introduction crowds the spectrum even further. Open and unlicensed frequency bands, like the 2.4 GHz ISM band, accommodate dozens of technologies. Each system expects to have free rein over the spectrum. But in reality, systems operating in this frequency band do impact each other, with unpredictable consequences.

 

A localized crowded spectrum with spurious signals can raise the noise floor, reducing the dynamic range and making it more difficult for the receiver to detect the intended transmitter and make a connection. This scenario is known as desensitization or receiver blocking. It is a form of electromagnetic (EM) interference where a radio receiver cannot receive a weak signal that it would likely be able to receive in the absence of interference.
