How to Design Soft-Switching Power Converter

EDA Software

Simulating soft-switching power converters

Designing a highly efficient power converter at higher frequencies requires implementing soft-switching techniques in the entire region of operation. To optimize overall performance and minimize switching losses, the simulation software should run complex control algorithms, addressing parasitic, thermal, EMI/EMC issues, and effects of additional resonant components like inductors and capacitors. To reduce manual iterations, the software runs interdependent control parameters such as output voltage, input voltage, conversion ratio, and load variations simultaneously.

The power converter designer identifies the right components and parameters for achieving stable soft switching under high voltage stress. Due to the influence of load on the output voltage, the simulation of the soft-switching converter needs to be run in the entire region of operation. Fine-tune the values of resonant components and parameters one at a time. Post-layout simulation helps validate the reliability of a soft-switching converter faster than building physical prototypes under varying conditions.

Simulation solution for soft-switching power converter

Designing a high-efficiency power converter at high frequencies requires a simulation solution that enables soft switching techniques. Keysight EDA Advanced Design System (ADS) provides the "tuner" functionality designed for optimizing circuits with multiple control parameters so the designer can dynamically adjust operational frequency and switch turn-on time while avoiding manual tweaking and iterations. It also allows for rapid exploration of the values of additional resonant components (Lr and Cr) to achieve soft switching. With integrated post-layout simulation, the designer can detect issues from parasitic, EMI, and thermal effects early in the design workflow.
